You guys. Have you ever had that moment when a story just clicks, and suddenly the flow is there?
I had that tonight. I’d been toying with this story idea for a few weeks now. It’s an idea that spun off from some of the characters in “In the Shadow of Secrets” (which comes out tomorrow … woot! Check that story out here). I knew the characters, I knew the general idea of what happened, I’ve even got a few snips of this story crafted.
But starting this story was like pushing through sludge. I could put words on the page, but they weren’t the right ones. Those come easy. These words were work. Dull, dead and boring … even to me, and I’m the one writing this thing!
So tonight, I was just ruminating. I’d reverted to trying to come up with a working title, something that captures the gist of the story. And you guys … “Broken Promises.” It works. It work! Because “promise” has a meaning in my world that doesn’t apply in the real world. You can both make a promise and be a promise.
I haven’t sat down to work on “Broken Promises” yet this evening, but as soon as I realized that “Broken Promises” was it, that muse spark was there. When I sit down to rework that intro tonight, I know the story is going to slay. (Yep, totally stealing slang from the kid.)
Which doesn’t mean I expect drafting this thing to be easy or quick, but it will feel so much better than it did!
If you’d like to come along on the adventure of “Broken Promises,” sign up for my newsletter. I’m planning to include a lot of my progress there!
