This post is probably a weird one to come right after my “hey, I finally published something!” post, but it is appropriate, because I’m now ready to dive into my next writing project (finishing up Harbinger). Except …
I read too much. Yes, I firmly believe that to be a good writer, you should read a lot. But most days, I would so much rather sit down and lose myself in someone else’s hard work than do my own!
And then there’s revising. Oh. my. goodness. REVISING. I can revise a story endlessly. As in, I’ve been “done” with Harbinger for literal years, but I keep revising and rewriting! I’m in the middle of my ninth (maybe 10th; I haven’t kept great track of my revisions) rewrite.
That’s one reason why I’m so stinking proud to have published “The Seer’s Story.” That was originally a character sketch/background exercise for Harbinger. But I needed to practice “letting go.” So I revised it (only five times!) and published it. (Woo-hoooo!! That’s never going to get old!! :)) Even then, after five revisions, it was hard to say “I’m done.”
Truth be told, I don’t know that I’ll ever really be done with my stories. I imagine I’ll be thinking of how I should have written that specific scene long after I’ve put my stories out into the world. But I’m going to try to be better about being done enough.
